Speech & Theatre
Boost your child’s vocal abilities through public speaking, debate and elocution.
Storytelling with Objects
Through the device of using objects, 'listening' to what the objects have to 'say' and then sharing their object's 'stories', kids will reveal layers about themselves and their lives. The exercises help them to introspect and pay attention to their own ideas and emotions. Building upon these stories using different mediums, participants will find forms to express their feelings in cathartic ways. The sessions will focus on each participant exploring their own imagination in a laboratory-like setting – through listening and building empathy for others.
Public Speaking Stars: Improv Games
In this class students will gain self-confidence, improve their presentation skills, and use their body language to convey ideas to an audience. By learning all about impromptu speaking through games and activities, students will learn early on how to handle unexpected situations and use their voice to shine. The objectives for this course are grounded on the 'Listening & Speaking' Common Core Standards for grades 2 to 3.
'Alice In Wonderland' on Stage
In this course, children will immerse themselves in the world of theatre while working on the magical story of the 'Alice in Wonderland'. Children will get the opportunity to read through and play different roles and dissect the amazing, nuanced characters of this all time favorite story. This theatre immersion program will end with the group performing the play for their families. Students will learn how to create a character through observation, experience and imagination. By playing a character, they will also learn about movement, voice modulation and behavior.
The Story Begins with Me
So many adults are hesitant, even fearful, of standing in front of a group for any reason. Students of this course will have an advantage because they will learn basic skills that can be build on as they grow older and are called upon to speak to individuals, small and large groups. During the first class students will describe themselves on paper and then read them aloud. From there we will move on to writing and reading a brief speech about a chosen topic. Students will then have the opportunity to select a poem and read it aloud, and finally act out a character monologue.
Reading & Writing
Enable your child to share their thoughts in powerful and eloquent written form.
Reading Comprehension: Folk Tales
Each week, students will focus on an element of storytelling. After performing a close reading of a selected folk tale, students will engage in meaningful activities to help with reading comprehension and writing skills. Each lesson concludes with sharing and celebrating student work.
Art & Design
Develop your child’s creative skills through traditional and digital art formats.
Each week the students will learn about a famous artist, view their work and then create art inspired by that artist. Along the way we will learn about and use the elements of art, and principles of design. Artist covered include: Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Van Gogh.
Storytelling through Comics
A "Jam Comic" is a collaborative drawing exercise in which artists draw a one panel comic based on a common drawing prompt. Each class will begin with this activity. Following the warm up, the teacher will guide students to create their own comic strips using the lesson objectives. The teacher will model each step of the process through guided drawing, collaborative brainstorming, and positive peer/ teacher critique.
