Basics of Fiction
Students are introduced to fiction writing by focusing on a different key topic each lesson. Students will learn about descriptive and figurative language, settings and world building, character development, plot, dialogue and strategies for approaching key moments in a story. Each lesson includes collaborative activities, discussion, writing prompts and feedback.
Folk Tales Around the World
Each week, students will focus on an element of storytelling. After performing a close reading of a selected folk tale, students will engage in meaningful activities to help with reading comprehension and writing skills. Each lesson concludes with sharing and celebrating student work.
Art & Design
Develop your child’s creative skills through traditional and digital art formats.
Each week the students will learn about a famous artist, view their work and then create art inspired by that artist. Along the way we will learn about and use the elements of art, and principles of design. Artist covered include: Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Van Gogh.
Explore Art History
Each week students will create a new painting, drawing or mixed media artwork inspired by art found throughout history, and across the world. This includes Roman Mosaics, Greek Story Vases, Egyptian Art and more.
Storytelling through Comics
A "Jam Comic" is a collaborative drawing exercise in which artists draw a one panel comic based on a common drawing prompt. Each class will begin with this activity. Following the warm up, the teacher will guide students to create their own comic strips using the lesson objectives. The teacher will model each step of the process through guided drawing, collaborative brainstorming, and positive peer/ teacher critique.
Introduction to Oil Pastels
In this course, young artists will explore and create with a delightful art medium: oil pastels! We will learn the basics and then explore techniques to create different effects. We will be doing a lot of experimentation with techniques and free exploration of ideas - the goal is for learners to get familiar with the many fun possibilities of oil pastels.
