Fairy Tale Fun
Each week students will be read a famous fairy tale for children. Students learn reading comprehension skills such as asking and answering questions about key details in the fairy tale, retelling stories to include the beginning, middle, and end, and identifying the elements of a story (characters, setting, plot, etc.). This course helps develop an interest in reading and builds on comprehension, reading and writing skills.
Harry Potter Book Club
In this course, young witches and wizards will read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Every lesson will have a discussion component, a writing component, and fun activities. The course ends with a final book report project and presentation. This course will helps kids develop an interest in reading and also help them develop their writing skills.
Writing and Acting Monologues
Each student will create an original character, write a monologue from that character’s point of view, and eventually perform the monologue for the class! Students will have the opportunity to discuss ideas with classmates, share drafts with Ms. Megan, and receive written feedback. We’ll also cover the basics of realistic acting and creative movement. During the last class, students will perform their monologues for the class in a supportive workshop setting and will receive direction and constructive feedback.
Writing Fantasy Edition
Students will examine the life and works of fantasy genre's greatest authors. We build upon weekly writing exercises, to help students draft an original, inspired fantasy piece by the end of the class. Students of all writing levels are certain to benefit from this course. Fun, yet practical writing exercises are certain to inspire young authors while providing them with tools to sharpen their craft.
Basics of Fiction
Students are introduced to fiction writing by focusing on a different key topic each lesson. Students will learn about descriptive and figurative language, settings and world building, character development, plot, dialogue and strategies for approaching key moments in a story. Each lesson includes collaborative activities, discussion, writing prompts and feedback.
Learn with Rhymes
Students will read stories, and learn popular nursery rhymes and songs. They will build vocabulary, write descriptively and sequence the main events of a story. Kids will showcase their self-expression and show their unique personalities through fun discussions and interactive exercises.
Folk Tales Around the World
Each week, students will focus on an element of storytelling. After performing a close reading of a selected folk tale, students will engage in meaningful activities to help with reading comprehension and writing skills. Each lesson concludes with sharing and celebrating student work.
