Lesson plan chevron_right

Each week we study the works of a spotlight author, taking into account their style, message, tone, voice, and more. After learning a bit about the author's biography and works, the class will explore a signature element of the featured author's writing. Students are then given a writing prompt inspired by the author's work. Students will spend time drafting, crafting, and sharing their writing. The class will learn and utilize a constructive model for giving and receiving peer feedback. The course will help students: - Examine the life and works of a spotlight author. - Perform a close reading focused on a highlighted element (characterization, mood, symbolism, and author's message) of the featured author's prose. - Draft, craft, and (optionally) share a piece of original work based upon a writing prompt inspired by the spotlight author. - Give, receive, and apply constructive feedback using a peer workshopping model. The outline of each lesson will be as below: - Ice breaker/ writing warm-up - Study of the author through biography, video, documentary, newspaper articles, magazine interviews, informational slides, and other resources followed by a brief discussion. - Examination of spotlight author's works; the class will specifically receive a mini-lesson on a highlighted element of the author's writing, for example: characters, dialogue, style, tone, message etc. - A connected writing prompt is assigned to each student. Students brainstorm their work using graphic organizers and attending to a specific focus. - Students craft pieces and ask questions to the teacher who offers support as needed. - Students share work and give and receive feedback using a positive, constructive peer review model. - At the conclusion of each lesson, students are encouraged to further along their writing and submit for feedback.
